In The Heart of North Wales
Wrexham is the primary Welsh settlement in North Wales. With a population circa 60,000, it has recently seen a resurgence in activity and profile being designated as a City, being a finalist for ‘City of Culture’ and the development of it football club by a Hollywood A Lister.
Wrexham is also the key economic driver for the North Wales economy both in relation to the city and the wider rural hinterland that includes villages such as
Coedpoeth,
Llay,
Gresford, and
Rhosllanerchrugog. The City is a centre for manufacturing, retail and education and hosts a range of institutions including local government, health, further and higher education. The City’s football heritage and club profile has put it firmly on the national and international map alongside the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site and numerous features reflecting the areas rich industry and culture economy. Because of these assets, Wrexham has many of the features that you would find in most modern cities.
Although only 5 miles west of the Cheshire border, Wrexham’s identity is firmly Welsh in terms of language and identity. Its cultural diversity is also reflected in the multiple languages spoken by mix of communities that have made Wrexham their home.
Like many other comparable cities Wrexham faces some typical challenges, amongst them strong regional competition, the need, to modernise its offer and attract investment in a different and fast changing business/consumer environment and addressing the perceptions of residents and business communities.
It is making a start with plans and investment being drawn up, including getting £20m for the Long-Term Town Plan Fund and a host of other regeneration initiatives underway.
It is against this backdrop and the desire to continue to evolve and succeed that the concept of a better performing and managed town is being examined.
Following on from a Feasibility Study, a business led group, the Wrexham BID Task Group was formed. These individuals/ organisations are giving freely of their time over the to look at ways in which the City could be improved. We are now starting the work on engaging with the wider business community to see whether a BID would be right for Wrexham.
